Access Point Installation for Small Offices: Placement, Cabling, and Common Mistakes
Small-office access point installation works best when placement, cabling, PoE power, and coverage are planned before hardware is mounted.

Small-office Wi-Fi problems are often blamed on internet speed, but the real issue may be access point placement, weak cabling, poor PoE planning, or consumer mesh hardware trying to do a business job.
A clean business Wi-Fi installation starts with the space. The goal is not to place the fewest access points possible. The goal is to give staff, guests, phones, tablets, scanners, and point-of-sale devices the coverage and reliability they actually need.
Ceiling placement usually beats shelf placement
Access points are built to serve a coverage area. When one sits on a shelf, behind a monitor, inside a cabinet, or beside a metal rack, the signal has to fight the room before it ever reaches users. Ceiling or properly placed wall mounting usually gives a cleaner result.
That is why cabling matters. A well-placed access point needs Ethernet in the right spot, and most business-grade APs also need PoE from a compatible switch or injector. Common small-office mistakes
- Trying to cover the whole office from one back-room router

- Forgetting guest network separation, vendor devices, and IoT equipment
- Using switches without enough PoE budget for the planned APs
Coverage is not the same as speed
A laptop can show Wi-Fi bars and still have poor performance. Plan APs with the wired network
